New environmental quality standards for surface water

The Flemish Government approved, on 21 May 2010 (published in the Belgian Official Gazette 9 July 2010), a decree concerning new environmental quality standards for surface water, water bottoms and groundwater.

The earlier environmental quality standards didn’t take in account, the ecological, hydrologic and chemical characteristics of a water system. The new standards will divide the waters in different types. Depending the type of water, other standards will apply concerning T, COD, BOD, pH, dissolved oxygen and biological parameters. Concerning the hazardous substances, these are not water type related. Here the quality standards apply for all types of watercourses

These new environmental quality standards have an impact on the water discharge standards of industrial waste water.

The new quality standards enter into force on 21 January 2011, companies can apply for an adjustment of the environmental permit within 6 months after this date, if necessary.
