INDUSS II and the benefits of clustering

How our 2nd Industrial Water Treatment Plant in Belgium services companies in the Port of Ghent

1.     The Challenge: matching cost-effective with tailor-made solutions

In an industrial area such as the Port of Ghent, the cost and operations of utilities are an important issue. By running simulations through modelling, Induss is able to demonstrate to customers and other stakeholders that the collective outsourcing and handling of water requirements beyond company borders (clustering) is both a viable and efficient solution for everyone.

Induss strives to help companies focus on their core business by taking care of the complete Design, Build, Finance and Operation cycle of water production and management (DBFO). Our aim is to ensure that each customer benefits from the most appropriate individual solution, as well as from competitive prices.

2.     The Answer: the Induss II industrial water treatment plant

Using the abundantly available, low-cost water from the Rodenhuize dock in Ghent, Induss II is able to produce four different tailored water qualities for three distinct types of customers.

Water is delivered to these customers through a distribution grid, guaranteeing a safe and continuous reliable supply to the various industrial production plants. With this approach, Induss offers its industrial customers a flexible, reliable and economical water supply solution tailored to their individual needs.

The process itself is designed to have a low environmental impact. In accordance with the EU Water Framework Directive, Induss uses non-vulnerable sources to create valuable water solutions for its customers.

Operating and performance-based window

Within the optimal operating-based window, the installation should be able to supply the required water qualities and quantities, although at a higher cost. However, operating within this system entails no negative consequences such as fouling, damage, early membrane ageing, etc. This operating-based window is defined as:

•          Feed temperature: 1 - 35°C;

•          Conductivity feed: 500 - 13,000 µS/cm;

•          Maximum chloride content: 3,000 mg/l.

Within the optimal performance-based window, other criteria apply. Here, the installation is geared up to meet required qualities and quantities within defined cost and energy consumption parameters. This performance-based window is defined as:

•          Feed temperature: 2 - 20°C;

•          Conductivity feed: 500 - 10,000 µS/cm;

•          Maximum chloride content: 3,000 mg/l.

3. The Benefits

Our plant was built with expansion possibilities in mind for existing and new customers. The building space, the engineering capacity and the planning capability to handle future developments are already in place.

Our Integrated Membrane System is a viable and efficient industrial water supply solution. Using a low-cost, non-vulnerable water source and few chemicals, it provides a sustainable system. This is particularly valuable in a region that is aware of the importance of sustainable water management. Due to discharge restrictions and the absence of sewerage and wastewater treatment plants, the use of chemicals is kept to a minimum.

By installing energy recovery units, we ensure minimal energy consumption.

The installation is monitored and operated remotely from Induss’s central control room, with minimum on-site intervention. This requires a high degree of performance monitoring, with the ability to register performance deviations at an early stage. A warning and monitoring system operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with an intervention team on standby. This means we can respond to any issues immediately while maintaining constant communication with customers, thereby ensuring minimal disruption to our customers’ production processes.
